Kim Gledhill

"The happy graphics of my childhood still make me happy and definitely influence my tastes as an adult, " Kim says. "I love strong, vibrant color and I avoid purely neutral color schemes like the plague. As a painter, I also like bold, stark shapes and imagery. I go for a mixture of high and low; of plastic and natural forms; of vintage with modern. Classics need to be messed up a bit, with an element of surprise. I design textiles that put me in a good mood and that I hope make others feel happy, too."

Along with her work for Hip Hound Couture, Kim designs prints for the handbag and homeware line Freddy and Ma (www.freddyandma.com), as well as various other fashion and accessory companies.

As a painter, Kim's work is heavily influenced by dreams and the subconscious, levels of being in which the language of symbols comes through loud and clear. She has always felt that dreams make some sort of intrinsic emotional sense. "The key to the universe can be found in dreams, if it could be found anywhere at all," she says. The starting point for her paintings is the belief that waking life is only part
of the whole picture, while subliminal states show us a glimmer of the truth. In her paintings, she tries to bridge the gap between the everyday, familiar things that fill our lives and the intangible realities beneath the surface that she believes many people accept, but rarely acknowledge.

Kim mentions a close synergy between designing prints and painting. "Textile design is like putting abbreviated paintings on objects," she says. "It's a way to affect your surroundings in an upbeat way." Kim's website is located at www.kimgledhill.com.
